Paul Costelloe Spring 2012

London Fashion Week
September 16, 2011

So here we are, the start of London Fashion Week. What a wonderful start it was courtesy of Paul Costelloe. Having said himself that he is still waiting for a career highlight, I personally feel that this is one of his best collections yet. Paul talks about his inspiration behind his Spring 2012 collection, he said “I found a lot of inspiration for my SS12 collection in the movie Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?, starring Bette Davis. The collection is innocent yet dangerous, with a neutral colour palette emphasising the 1970s Paris-inspired silhouettes.”

Whatever Happened to Baby Jane is a chilling-film about an actress who is involved in an accident which resulted in an early retirement. The women is left in virtual isolation at home with a sister who is rather cruel. I won’t give any more of the story away, but you should watch it. Anyway, the film was made in the early 60s so we should expect some silhouette which matches that era.

What did we get? well we got beautiful 60s/70s inspired silhouettes that look cute and charming in a palette of beige and neutral. There was also some black, salmon-pink and a aqua-green garments. I thought the show was rather well done. The models looked cute and innocent in the garments, but just in the film (where he got the inspiration), looks can be deceiving. You can kind of imagine these models dressing up to look all sweet, but behind closed doors, they are evil - just like the evil sister.
Particular favourites in this collection include a long aqua-green coat and a neutral-toned jacket with silver buttons complete with a skirt. A fabulous start to London Fashion Week, courtesy of Paul Costelloe.
